The 2nd Annual National High School Musical Theatre Awards
Your Chance to Perform on Broadway!
On Sunday, April 26 and Monday, April 27, Rubicon Theatre Company and Ensemble Theatre Company will host auditions for high school musical theatre students from Ventura and Santa Barbara County to participate in The National High School Musical Theatre Awards.
This is a national musical theatre talent competition to win $1,000 plus an all-expenses-paid trip to New York, where winners receive five days of private coaching and master classes with Broadway professionals. While in New York, selected participants appear before a panel of industry experts who select exceptional students to compete for The Jimmy™ Awards for Best Performance by an Actress and Actor, culminating in a performance on Broadway!
COMPETITION SCHEDULE
ROUND 1: Preliminary Auditions for Ventura and Santa Barbara County Students
Sunday April 26, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Auditions for Ventura County students at Rubicon Theatre Company in Ventura.
Monday April 27, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Auditions for Santa Barbara County students at the New Vic, home of The Ensemble Theatre Company in Santa Barbara.
Preliminary Auditions will be held by appointment. Although only 12 finalists are selected to perform their solos in Round 2, every student who participates in the preliminary audition is invited to perform in the opening and closing number of the Santa Barbara show.
Please note: Students who participate in Round 2 will be required to attend one of the two following rehearsals: May 6 from 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. in Ventura and May 7 from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. in Santa Barbara. There will also be mandatory rehearsals and master class for all participants on Sunday May 10 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and a final tech rehearsal on Monday, May 11 from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. – both in Santa Barbara.
ROUND 2: The NHSMT Festival in Santa Barbara
Monday, May 11, 2015:12 finalists from Round 1 get a chance to share their talents and compete in front of a live audience and a panel of industry professionals. These adjudicated performances will be part of an entire evening of entertainment hosted by Broadway stars, Teri Bibb and Davies Gaines . The show will be a regional musical celebration that includes opening and closing numbers featuring all participants from Round 1 and performances by area high school drama departments in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. The evening culminates with the announcement of the two finalists, who then move on to Round 3.
ROUND 3: The Jerry Herman Awards
Monday, June 1, 2015 – The two finalists from Round 2 compete with other L.A. area students at the Pantages Theatre for the Jerry Herman Awards. Students receive three days of master classes and rehearse as part of an ensemble for the awards show. As with the previous round, all student participants perform in the ensemble numbers of the show, with a select few being offered an opportunity to have their performances adjudicated for the chance to win merit scholarships, professional advancement and prizes including a check for $1,000 plus and an all expense paid trip to New York. During their stay, they will experience five days of private coaching and participate in master classes with theatre professionals, which leads to the final round.
FINAL ROUND: The Jimmy™ Awards
The competition culminates on Monday, June 29, 2015at 7:30 p.m. at the Minskoff Theatre, in Manhattan with a two-hour show in which contestants make their final appearance before a panel of industry experts who select exceptional students for the coveted Jimmy™ Award for Best Performance by an Actor and Best Performance by an Actress at the seventh annual presentation. Qualifications: Contestants must be a high school student in Santa Barbara or Ventura County, and must perform a musical number from a role that’s listed as eligible on the official site of the JimmyTM Awards. Entry Fee: There is a non-refundable entry fee of $75 for each participant which includes a master class with Broadway professionals on Sunday May 10, 2015.
Application: Complete the online entry form application and submit it with you payment by April 15, 2015 to qualify. DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MONDAY APRIL 20, 2015.
What happens after I submit my application?
Once your application is process you will be notified and given an audition appointment time.
Contestants will need to send a copy of their music to Brian McDonald at bmcdonald@rubicontheatre.org. Be sure that the music is clearly marked and in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided.
QUESTIONS?
What happens at the preliminary auditions?
All participants perform their song before a panel of professional judges. All student who participate in the preliminary auditions are invited to perform in the open and closing numbers at the May 11 event in Santa Barbara, however, only 6 contestants from each county will be selected to perform their solos which will be adjudicated in Round 2.
Can I use a Karaoke CD?
The use of a karaoke track or with or without vocals is strictly prohibited. All contestants are required to sing with live music. You must bring your sheet music in the correct key, clearly marked and in a three-ring binder.
Do I need to wear a costume?
Although costumes are not mandatory they are allowed. Students needing to change will have access to a changing area or bathroom.
Can I use props?
The use of props is not allowed. However a stool or chair will be provided for use.
May we use any scenery or lights?
There will be no use of scenery and light changes are not allowed.
Is there sound?
Sound amplification is not provided.
